What is Humane Education?

Humane education is a field of study that examines the connections between animal protection, human rights, environmental ethics and consumerism. It calls upon each one of us to make positive choices to create a more peaceful, just and sustainable world.

The goal of humane education is to:

  • Encourage critical thinking, creativity and curiousity
  • Encourage students to show respect and reverence for people, the earth, and all beings
  • Encourage positive and compassionate behaviour
  • Promotes self-esteem and leadership through character-building exercises
  • Fosters citizenship

What is “Power of One”?

Power of One is the humane education program of the Vancouver Humane Society. We provide downloadable interactive presentations and support materials for teachers interested in incorporating humane issues in their classrooms.
